Navigational Aids ^

Upon Your Arrival to Marina del Rey ^

Lat/Long - MdR
33° 572 .8N-118° 272 .5”W

A detached breakwater parallel to the shore with an illuminated American flag is seaward of two jetties (one north and one south) with green and red navigation lights at their seaward ends protecting the entrance of Marina del Rey.

Navigation Lights ^

South Jetty green light flashes every 4 seconds
South Breakwater red light flashes every 6 seconds
North Breakwater green light flashes every 6 seconds
North Jetty red light flashes every 4 seconds

Fog Signal ^

A fog horn and radio beacon are located at the end of the north jetty with 2 second fog blasts sounded every 20 seconds and recognizable up to Ω-mile from the harbor entrance at the breakwater.

Hazards ^

Shoaling conditions exist at both north and south jetties with shoals extending 75' west. Shoal buoys have been placed to warn boaters of entrance hazards and boats should not pass inside marked buoys.

Anchored vessels at the foot of Ballona Creek (adjacent to the south jetty) pose another hazard to navigation in reduced visibility and extreme caution is advised when transiting this area.

The Harbor Master at Marina del Rey is advising that the Shoaling condition at the North Entrance to Marina del Rey is growing in size. It appears that sand from the Venice beaches has begun to sweep south, and is extending the current footprint into the North Entrance from the North Jetty. Additional shoal buoys have been placed off of the North Jetty to warn boaters.

All boaters using the North Entrance to Marina del Rey are urged to exercise caution when navigating this area. Shoal buoys should be given a wide berth.

During the winter months, you can expect very low tides and prudent boaters should consult local Tide Tables whenever they expect to traverse hazardous areas prone to shoaling conditions.

Boaters may contact the Marina del Rey Sheriff's Station on VHF Marine Radio, Channel 16 or by telephone at 310-482-6000 for updated information on the entrance conditions.

Harbor Depth ^

Average harbor depth in Marina del Rey is 10-14 feet

Traffic Separation Lanes ^

Traffic separation lanes have been established in Marina del Rey and are marked by State Waterway Regulatory Buoys. All vessels under power (power and sail) shall keep the buoys to port when entering the harbor.

Harbor Basins ^

Eight (8) basins lettered A through H are located in Marina del Rey.

U.S. Coast Guard/Noaa Information ^

A good source of information that concerns navigation as well as many other issues all boaters should keep abreast of is the U.S. Coast Guard's Local Notice to Mariners. Marina del Rey falls within the U.S. Coast Guard Eleventh District, which provides the Local Notice to Mariners for the Southern California region. For additional information on navigation issues please visit NOAA's website at http://www.noaa.gov.
